Technology recruitment, done properly.
MENA Tech is a Barcelona-based technology recruiter working with product companies, scale-ups and enterprises across the EU, the UK and North America. We place engineers, architects and technology leaders in software, cloud, security, data and AI. When you know the project but not the team, we map that out first.
An illustrative project blueprint. Yours would be based on your actual project, timeline and market.
Two ways to start
Come to us with a role. Or come with a problem.
You know the roles
You have an open position, or several. Send us the brief and we run the search: specialist sourcing, a video interview with every candidate before you see them, and a shortlist of three to five people with a written assessment on each.
See our services →You know the project, not the team
You know what you need to build and by when, but not who it takes. We study the project, define the roles, seniorities and hiring sequence, and tell you what it costs and how long it takes to assemble. Then we hire them.
About the project blueprint →What we recruit
From engineers to C-level leaders, across the whole stack.
Backend, frontend, full-stack, mobile and engineering leadership across Java, .NET, Python, Go, Node.js, TypeScript, Rust and Kotlin ecosystems.
Cloud architects, platform engineers, SRE and Kubernetes specialists across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, from migration to multi-region resilience.
Security engineers, SOC analysts, cloud and application security architects, offensive security, and GRC for NIS2, DORA, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 programs.
Data engineers, analytics engineers, data scientists, BI leads and data platform architects on Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, dbt and modern data stacks.
Applied ML and MLOps engineers, LLM and generative-AI specialists, research engineers, and AI product engineers building on OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face and open-source stacks.
CTOs, VPs of Engineering, Heads of Platform, CISOs and Chief Data Officers. Retained executive search with a written market map alongside every shortlist.
We also recruit ERP, CRM and business-systems specialists (SAP, Salesforce, Workday, Oracle, Dynamics), QA and test automation engineers, product managers, UX engineers, and IT infrastructure and support roles. If the work is technical, we cover it.
Three ways to hire
Permanent, contract, or a whole project team.
Permanent hiring
We find and place the person; they join your payroll. Success-fee basis, so nothing is payable until they start.
Contract hiring
Engineers contracted through us who work inside your team for a defined period. Billed monthly, no permanent headcount.
Project teams
We assemble and supply the whole team for a defined scope, against agreed milestones. One contact, one contract.
Hiring in the Gulf, or need something outside technology recruitment? Our parent company MENA BIG is a business consulting firm operating across the Middle East and North Africa, including employer-of-record services in Saudi Arabia. Our focus is Europe and North America, but we are not limited to it, so tell us what you need and we will route it properly.
How we work
From brief to shortlist in four steps. Full process below.
Brief
A structured intake covering the role, the team, the stack and the constraints. If the brief will not work as written, this is where we say so.
Search
Assigned to the recruiter who specializes in that technology area. Sourcing begins the day the brief is confirmed.
Screen
Every candidate is interviewed by video before you see them. No CV-only submissions.
Shortlist
Three to five profiles, each with a written assessment rather than a reformatted CV. Reviewed internally before it reaches you.
Project blueprint
Not sure who you need to hire? We map the team first.
Most failed hires are definition failures, not sourcing failures.
Tell us what you are building and we will map the team it actually needs: every role, at what seniority, how many of each, when each one is needed, what they cost in your market, and how long each takes to fill. Then you decide whether to hire it through us or not.
Get a project blueprintAbout us
A European specialist, backed by a decade of group experience.
MENA Tech is based in Barcelona and works with clients across the EU, the UK and North America. We are the technology recruitment practice of the MENA BIG group, a consulting firm with over ten years of experience placing technical professionals across the Middle East, North Africa and, increasingly, Europe.
That structure is why we move at pace where other new firms start cold: a candidate network built over a decade and group-wide expertise in how technical teams actually get built. In cloud, security, data and AI, where local candidates are genuinely scarce, that reach is often the difference between a role filled in five weeks and one that stays open for five months.

Talk to us
Tell us what you are building.
We will produce a project blueprint: the roles it needs, at what seniority, in what order, what they cost in your market, and how long the team takes to assemble. No cost, no obligation, no requirement to hire through us afterwards.
Three ways to hire.
Every hire comes down to one question: whose payroll is this person on? Yours, ours, or ours as part of a team we supply and manage. Not sure which applies? Describe the role and we will tell you, including when the cheaper option is the right one.
Permanent hiring
We find and place the person; they join your payroll.
How it works
You brief us on the role. It is assigned to the recruiter who specializes in that area and sourcing begins the same day. Within five to ten working days you receive a shortlist of three to five screened candidates, each with a written assessment. We coordinate every interview, manage the offer including counter-offer risk, and check in with you and the candidate after they start.
What it suits
Most permanent technology hires, junior through to leadership, where you want the person on your own payroll.
Senior and confidential searches
For roles where a wrong hire is expensive enough to justify a more rigorous process, such as heads of engineering, CTOs, CISOs and principal architects, we run the search on a retained, exclusive basis. That means a longer intake with hiring stakeholders, a written search brief you sign off before we start, systematic market mapping rather than reactive sourcing, fixed-interval progress reports whether or not there is news, and a written market map delivered alongside the shortlist.
How it is billed
Contingency: a single success fee based on the candidate's gross annual salary, invoiced on their start date. Nothing is payable if you do not hire. Retained: split between an installment on engagement and the balance on placement.
Contract hiring
Engineers contracted through us, working inside your team.
How it works
You tell us the skills, the duration and the working arrangement. We supply screened people who work under your direction, embedded in your team, contracted through us rather than employed by you. Month-to-month or fixed-term. If someone is not working out, we replace them.
What it suits
Delivery peaks, parental and long-term sick cover, fixed-term programs that do not justify permanent headcount, and specialists you need for six months rather than forever.
How it is billed
Monthly, at an agreed all-in rate per person covering their cost, statutory contributions and our margin. No separate placement fee.
Compliance
Cross-border contracting is where most agencies get sloppy and clients inherit the exposure. We contract through our Spanish entity and run written IR35 status determinations for UK engagements. We will tell you which structure applies to your role before we quote a rate.
Project teams
A whole team for a defined scope, against agreed milestones.
How it works
When you have a defined scope, we assemble the team rather than filling positions one at a time. We agree the composition, the milestones and the fee up front. You get one point of contact and one contract instead of five separate contractor relationships.
What it suits
A migration, a platform build, a product delivery, a security remediation program: anything with a clear beginning and end. It is also the natural next step after a project blueprint, when the blueprint has defined the team and you would rather we supplied all of it than hire piece by piece.
How it is billed
A fixed fee for the agreed scope, invoiced against milestones.
Not sure which fits?
Most first conversations end with us recommending a different structure to the one the client expected. Describe what you are working on and we will be straight about which one costs you least.
What we recruit.
We recruit across the full technology stack, from software and infrastructure through data, security and applied AI, into specialist domains like embedded systems, FinTech and executive leadership. Each area below is written by the recruiter who runs it, with an honest account of where the market is tight and how we work around it.
Software engineering
Volume is the problem, not scarcity. Software engineering has the largest applicant pool of any technical discipline and by some distance the worst signal-to-noise ratio. A mid-level backend posting in a major European city can attract several hundred applications, most of them unsuitable. What keeps the role open is the screening cost, not the search cost, and that is a cost most internal teams cannot absorb alongside their actual jobs.
The second issue is language and location requirements. Many European employers still require working German, Dutch or French for engineering roles that do not genuinely need it, and remote-work policies vary widely across the same client base. Each constraint can halve a viable pool overnight. We will tell you exactly what each requirement costs you in candidates and in weeks on the market.
The third is seniority calibration. A great deal of what is advertised as senior is a mid-level role with a senior title and a mid-level salary. Candidates read specifications carefully and are unforgiving about the mismatch. Our shortlists include a written seniority assessment alongside the technical fit.
Cloud & platform engineering
Cloud roles are defined by combinations, not skills. A client rarely needs “an AWS engineer”; they need someone who has run Kubernetes in production on AWS, with Terraform, in a regulated environment, at their scale. Each qualifier removes most of the market. Written specifications almost never distinguish the genuine requirements from the wishful ones, so the first thing we do is establish which two or three actually matter.
Supply is also being consumed faster than it is created. Every enterprise migration and every AI infrastructure program competes for the same senior platform engineers, and the people who have done it before are largely employed and not actively looking. We approach them directly rather than waiting for them to apply.
This is also the discipline where counter-offers are most aggressive. Losing a platform engineer is operationally painful, so employers fight hard to keep them. A three-round interview process spread over two weeks will lose these candidates. We help clients compress their process without lowering the bar.
Cybersecurity
There is effectively no unemployment in security. ISC2 puts the global workforce gap at 4.8 million people, up 19% year on year; every candidate we approach is already employed, and most are approached weekly. Traditional job advertising has largely stopped working for this discipline.
Regulation is now the demand driver. NIS2 and DORA have moved security hiring from a discretionary line to a compliance obligation for a large population of European organizations simultaneously, which means a great many companies are competing for the same small candidate pool against the same deadlines. Timing matters more here than in almost any other area we work in.
Screening is genuinely difficult. Certifications are abundant and correlate poorly with capability, and a significant share of applicants present adjacent IT experience as security experience. Our security screening is done by a recruiter working exclusively in this area, not by a generalist reading a certification list.
Data & analytics
Job titles do not mean what they say. “Data scientist” covers everything from dashboard analytics to production machine-learning systems, and the gap between those two people is enormous. Most failed data hires are a definition failure rather than a sourcing failure, which is exactly the problem our project blueprint exists to solve.
The infrastructure layer is the real bottleneck. Most organizations that believe they need a data scientist need a senior data engineer first. Modeling talent is easier to hire than the platform talent that makes modeling useful. We will say so before you brief the wrong role.
The modern data stack is a moving target. Snowflake, Databricks, dbt and Iceberg have redrawn the map in three years, and candidates who know the current tooling on production workloads are a small population. We track vendor experience explicitly rather than treating "data engineer" as a single search.
AI & machine learning
Demand has moved faster than supply can answer. AI and machine-learning postings grew by more than 160% year on year in North America and European demand has followed the same curve. People with genuine production machine-learning experience, as distinct from notebook or hackathon experience, remain a small population, and the generative-AI subset is smaller still.
The market has three distinct populations that clients routinely conflate. Applied research engineers who train and fine-tune models. ML engineers who ship those models into production. AI product engineers who build applications on top of foundation-model APIs. All three are advertised as "AI engineers" and the wrong hire in the wrong slot delivers nothing. Our intake conversation always establishes which of the three you actually need.
Compensation benchmarks are unstable. Frontier-lab and Big-Tech comp packages have distorted the market for senior candidates, and salary data older than six months is misleading. We refresh our AI compensation data quarterly and share the ranges before you post the role.
Technology leadership & executive search
Executive technology hires are the most consequential and the least reversible decisions our clients make. A wrong VP of Engineering costs a company a year of momentum and often a wave of attrition below them. That risk is why every leadership search we run is retained and exclusive: a longer intake with the board or hiring stakeholders, a written search brief you sign off before we begin, and systematic market mapping instead of reactive sourcing.
The market map is the deliverable that separates a serious search from a paperwork exercise. Alongside the shortlist we deliver a written map of the twenty-to-thirty people in the market who could credibly do the role, why we approached the ones we approached, and why the others were ruled out. Clients tell us it is the most useful artefact they receive from any recruitment engagement.
We also support onboarding. A first ninety days that goes wrong is usually a set-up problem rather than a candidate problem, and a short structured program in the first three months significantly reduces the rate at which executive hires do not stick.
Specialist areas
Six further areas we recruit in, each run by the discipline lead closest to it.
Embedded software, firmware and real-time systems engineers, IoT platform architects, robotics and automotive software, including safety-critical work under ISO 26262 and DO-178C.
SAP, Salesforce, Workday, Oracle, Dynamics 365 and ServiceNow consultants, developers and program leads, plus business systems analysts and integration specialists.
Software development engineers in test, test automation and performance engineers, test architects, release engineers and heads of quality engineering.
Payments, core banking, trading and quantitative engineers, blockchain and smart-contract specialists, and risk, fraud and RegTech engineers working inside FCA, BaFin, MiCA and PCI DSS environments.
Product managers from senior through to chief product officer, technical and AI product managers, UX engineers and design-systems engineers.
Network, systems, identity and access, endpoint and collaboration engineers, IT service managers, and heads of IT and technical operations.
Hiring in one of these areas? Tell us about the role and we will put you with the lead who covers it.
How we are structured
A specialist recruiter for every discipline, not a generalist reading a job spec.
Each discipline is run by a small pod: a lead recruiter, a researcher, and a delivery partner. The lead knows the market on their patch and stays with an account from first call through to onboarding.
For team builds spanning multiple disciplines, such as cloud plus data plus security, one commercial lead coordinates the pods so you deal with one contact, not five, and receive one aligned shortlist per role.
The research function tracks compensation, tenure, movement and skills evolution across every discipline continuously. When you brief a role, the market data is already there. We do not start from a blank page.
A role in mind, or a project not yet mapped?
Send us the brief and we will assign it to the pod that runs your discipline. If you are still working out which roles you need, start with a blueprint instead. Same team, upstream of the search.
How we work.
Most agencies describe their process in three vague steps. Ours is eleven, and we publish it, because the specifics are why our shortlists arrive quickly and contain people you actually want to meet.
Brief and intake
A structured session covering the role, the team, the stack, the interview process, the budget and the timeline. We produce a written intake document, not notes. If something in the brief will not work, this is where we say so. If you do not yet know which roles you need, a project blueprint comes first instead.
Terms agreed
The engagement model, the fee basis and any replacement terms are confirmed in a written engagement letter before work begins. No search starts on a verbal agreement.
Handover to the recruitment team
Your role reaches the delivery team within 24 hours of the brief, assigned to the recruiter who specializes in that area.
Sourcing
Direct approach across our own database, professional networks and targeted headhunting. Begins the day the role is assigned.
Qualification
Screening on the essentials: technical fit, notice period, salary expectation, location and work authorization. Anyone failing a hard requirement stops here rather than reaching your inbox.
Technical screening
Where appropriate, a structured assessment or a review of the candidate's public work.
Recruiter interview
A full competency and motivation interview by video. Every candidate, without exception.
Profile preparation and internal review
Each profile carries a written assessment covering strengths, gaps and fit for your specific role. Reviewed internally before it leaves us. The recruiter who sourced the candidate is not the last person to check the work.
Shortlist
Three to five candidates with a recommendation and a clear explanation of the trade-offs between them.
Interview coordination
We schedule everything, brief the candidate, and collect feedback from both sides within 24 hours of each round. Slow feedback loses candidates, so we chase it.
Offer, placement and follow-up
We manage the offer conversation including counter-offer risk, and check in with you and the candidate at week one, month one and month three.
Our commitments
These are commitments, not averages.
Every number opposite is one you can quote back to us. If we are going to miss one, you will hear it from us before you notice it. Response times cover working hours in Central European Time; every commitment survives holidays via named cover.
Retained executive searches carry additional commitments: a written search brief signed off before we begin, progress reports every two weeks whether or not there is news, and a market map delivered alongside the shortlist. Those terms are captured in the engagement letter.
| Brief passed to the delivery team | Within 24 hours |
| First shortlist, permanent roles | 5–10 working days |
| First shortlist, retained search | 5–10 working days |
| Interviews scheduled after your approval | Within 48 hours |
| Response to any message from you | Within 1 working day |
| Post-placement check-ins | Week 1, month 1, month 3 |
Our standards
Four rules that do not move.
If only two genuinely fit, we send two and explain why.
No exceptions, including for urgent roles.
A reformatted CV is not a candidate profile.
The recruiter who sourced the candidate is not the last person to check the work.
Not sure who you need to hire?
Tell us what you are building and we will map the team it requires: roles, seniorities, sequence, cost and timeline.
Know who you need, before you hire.
Most failed technical hires are not sourcing failures. They are definition failures. The wrong role, at the wrong seniority, hired in the wrong order. Tell us what you are building and we will map the team it actually needs, before you commit to a single job posting.
Why it matters
It happens before the search starts.
A company decides to rebuild its platform, migrate to the cloud, or stand up a data function. Somebody estimates the team, usually a technical lead with a full-time job already, working from the last project they ran. Three senior engineers, they say. A DevOps person, probably.
Six months later the picture is different. Two of the three seniors are doing work a mid-level engineer could do. Nobody owns the infrastructure. The data work has stalled because the platform underneath it was never built. The budget is spent and the project has moved a third of the distance it was meant to.
None of that was a recruitment problem. Every hire was competent. The team was specified wrong before anyone opened a job advertisement.
What's inside
Four things, delivered together.
The work, broken down
What your project actually requires technically, phase by phase. Not a restatement of your brief, but our reading of what has to be built and in what order.
The team it needs
Every role, at what seniority, how many of each, and when each one is needed. Including the roles most teams forget until it is too late.
Cost and timeline
Realistic salary or rate bands in your target market, and an honest assessment of how long each role takes to fill. Some are three weeks. Some are three months.
Hire, contract, or neither
Which roles justify permanent headcount, which are better contracted for the duration, and which you may not need at all. We will tell you where you can spend less, including on us.
How it works
Four steps. The last one is genuinely optional.
Tell us about the project
What you are building, the timeline, the budget range if you are willing to share it, and what exists already. Twenty minutes on a call, or the form below.
We study it
Prepared by our discipline recruitment leads working alongside the MENA BIG group's technology consulting practice. Ten working days from the intake conversation.
We walk you through it
A 45-minute call to talk through what we found, where we would recommend a different approach, and what the sequenced hiring plan looks like. Recorded and shared afterwards for internal reference.
Hire it, or don't
If you want us to assemble the team, we can start immediately from the plan we just built. If you would rather recruit it yourself, or with someone else, that is a reasonable outcome too. The blueprint is yours either way.
Why it's free
Two reasons, and neither is charitable.
First, a badly specified project wastes our time as much as yours. If we take a brief for three senior engineers when the project needs two mid-levels and an architect, we will spend two months failing to satisfy you. We would rather establish that at the start.
Second, this is how we prefer to be judged. It is a real piece of work, done properly, before you have paid us anything. If it is good, you will have a reason to talk to us about hiring the team. If it is not, you have lost an hour.
There is no obligation attached. Take the blueprint and recruit the team yourself if you want to. Some clients do, and that is fine.

Market briefings.
Research on the technology hiring markets we work in: what is genuinely short, what it costs, and what that means if you are trying to build a team.
How many people does your project actually need?
Working through a realistic cloud migration end-to-end, from a one-line executive statement to a specified team of eight, with an honest look at the four places companies reliably get it wrong.
The European cybersecurity shortage is now a compliance problem
NIS2 and DORA have turned security hiring from a discretionary line into a regulatory deadline. What that does to competition for a fixed pool of candidates, and how to hire around it.
What cloud, data and security specialists cost across Europe in 2026
Benchmark ranges by market and seniority for the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Nordics and France, refreshed quarterly from live placement data, not stale surveys.
The three kinds of "AI engineer" and which one you actually need
Applied research, ML production, and AI product engineering are three different careers advertised under one job title. A short guide to hiring the right one on the first attempt.
Why senior platform engineers are the tightest market in tech
Every cloud migration, every AI program and every SRE reorganization competes for the same three thousand people across Europe. What that means for interview process, comp and timeline.
Permanent, contract, or a whole team: a decision framework
A short, opinionated guide to structuring technology hiring around what a role actually is: a permanent capability, a defined-duration need, or one strand of a bigger project. With worked examples.

About MENA Tech.
MENA Tech recruits technology professionals for companies across Europe and North America, and helps them work out which team a project needs in the first place. We are based in Barcelona, and we exist because the roles our clients care most about are the ones their local markets cannot supply.
Two problems
Supply, and definition.
The first is supply. The shortage in European technology hiring is structural, not cyclical. Across most of Europe and North America, cloud, security and data roles cannot be filled from the local market at any realistic salary.
The second is definition. A significant share of the roles we are asked to fill are specified wrong: the wrong seniority, the wrong sequence, or a role that should not exist while a more fundamental one is unfilled. No amount of sourcing fixes a brief that was wrong when it was written.
We built the firm to address both. A candidate network that extends well beyond Europe deals with the first. The project blueprint deals with the second.
Part of MENA BIG
The European arm of a group with a decade behind it.
MENA Tech is the technology recruitment practice of the MENA BIG group. MENA BIG is a business consulting firm operating across the Middle East and North Africa, with more than a decade of experience including technical recruitment and employer-of-record services in Saudi Arabia. MENA Tech is its European arm, based in Barcelona, focused on technology, and working with clients in the EU, the UK and North America.
That structure is useful in a practical way. We are a Spanish company, so your contract and point of contact sit inside the EU. And when you need something outside our scope, such as hiring in the Gulf, non-technical roles or consulting work, we can hand it to a group colleague rather than to a stranger.

mena-big.com →How we work with you
One contact, and a specialist on every role.
Every client has one commercial contact who stays with the account from the first call through to placement and afterwards. Every role is assigned to a recruiter who works in that technical area specifically rather than across all of them, because the difference between a recruiter who understands Kubernetes and one who has memorized the word is obvious to every candidate they contact.
No shortlist reaches a client without being reviewed by someone other than the recruiter who built it. And no candidate reaches your inbox without a live conversation with our team about your specific role, your team and your interview process, which is what tells us whether the fit is real.
What we won't do
Four things we rule out in writing.
Every candidate has a video interview with one of our recruiters before you see their profile.
A shortlist is three to five people, each with a written assessment explaining why they are on it.
You get a progress update whether or not there is good news.
If the role is not fillable at that budget, in that location, on that timeline, we will say so on the first call rather than take the brief and disappoint you in month three.
Not sure who you need to hire?
Tell us what you are building and we will map the team it requires.
Tell us what you are working on.
An open role, or a project you have not scoped yet: either is a good reason to get in touch. A short call is usually enough for us to tell you whether we can help. If we cannot, we will say so and point you somewhere better.
Monday to Friday, 09:00–18:00 CET, and we read the brief, not just the job title.
Including whether the role is fillable at that budget, in that location, on that timeline.
